How to Host a Relaxed and Creative DIY Paint Party

Hosting your own paint party is such a lovely way to bring people together for an evening of creativity, laughter, and genuine connection. Whether you are planning a birthday celebration, hen party, family gathering, community event, team-building session, or simply a cosy evening with friends, painting creates a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere where people can switch off from everyday life and just enjoy the process of creating something with their own hands.
One of the things I love most about paint parties is that they are not really about creating “perfect” art. They are about the experience itself. The conversations, the laughter when something goes wrong, the moments where someone who swore they “couldn’t paint” suddenly creates something they are genuinely proud of.
And the best part? You absolutely do not need to be an experienced artist to enjoy one.
Creating a Relaxed and Welcoming Atmosphere
The atmosphere you create honestly makes such a difference to the overall experience. A paint party should feel relaxed, welcoming, and comfortable — not like sitting in an exam trying to get everything “right”.
Soft lighting, good music, snacks, and a little bit of organised chaos all help create the perfect setting. If possible, natural lighting is wonderful during daytime sessions, but in the evenings warm lamps or fairy lights can make the space feel really cosy and inviting.
Music also helps people settle into the creative flow. I usually recommend something uplifting and relaxed rather than anything too loud or distracting. Acoustic playlists, gentle indie music, jazz, or chilled background music all work beautifully.
Make sure everyone has enough room to paint comfortably too. You do not need huge amounts of space, but giving people room for water pots, brushes, and movement helps keep things enjoyable rather than stressful.
And most importantly — remind people from the very beginning that perfection is absolutely not the goal.
What You Need for a DIY Paint Party:
One of the reasons paint parties are so popular is because they are actually quite simple to set up once you have the basics ready.
For most beginner-friendly acrylic painting sessions, you will need:
Canvas panels or stretched canvases
Acrylic paints
A selection of brushes
Water pots
Palettes for mixing colours
Kitchen roll or cloths
Table covers or reusable protective sheets
Aprons or old clothing
Easels if desired, though they are not essential
If you are keeping things simple, a large flat brush, a medium flat brush, and a small round detail brush are enough for most projects.
Acrylic paint is ideal for beginners because it dries quickly, layers beautifully, and is generally very forgiving to work with. You can use inexpensive bottled acrylics very successfully for home paint parties too.

Choosing a Painting Theme or Project
When planning your event, it helps to choose a painting subject that feels achievable and enjoyable for complete beginners.
Florals, sunsets, landscapes, simple animals, and loose abstract designs all tend to work brilliantly because they allow people to relax and interpret things in their own way.
One of the biggest mistakes people make when hosting paint nights is choosing something far too detailed. Remember that your guests are there to enjoy themselves — not become frustrated trying to paint every tiny detail perfectly.
Loose and expressive often works best.
You can also tailor themes around the season or occasion. Spring florals, autumn pumpkins, Highland cows, beach scenes, and festive paintings are always popular choices.
Guided Paint Parties vs DIY at Home
Some people absolutely love putting together their own DIY paint evenings at home, while others prefer taking the stress out of organising by booking a guided session instead.
If you enjoy hosting and organising, a DIY paint party can be a really affordable and personal way to spend time together. You can pause tutorials, paint at your own pace, and create a really relaxed evening around it.
However, if you would rather not worry about sourcing materials, planning the project, or guiding nervous beginners, booking a professional paint party can make the whole experience feel much easier.
At Sunflower Artistry, I offer fully guided paint parties where all materials are provided and guests are guided step-by-step in a relaxed and encouraging way. These can be tailored for birthdays, hen parties, private gatherings, schools, workplaces, care settings, community organisations, and special events.
I also offer online tutorials and video bundles for those who prefer to paint from home at their own pace. Some people enjoy these as a quiet bit of solo creativity, while others use them to create their own paint nights with friends and family.
You can even get a DIY bundle giving you the best of both. TAKE A LOOK

Helping Guests Feel Comfortable and Confident
One of the most important things during any paint party is helping people feel comfortable enough to actually enjoy themselves.
So many adults arrive convinced they are “bad at art” because they have not painted since school. Often, within twenty minutes, you can actually see them beginning to relax once they realise there is no pressure.
Encourage experimentation.Celebrate individuality.Remind people that every painting will look different.
Some of the most beautiful paintings are the ones with personality and unexpected little quirks.
The goal is not identical paintings. The goal is enjoyment, confidence, and creativity.
Eco-Friendly Tips for More Sustainable Painting
As someone who tries to run my creative business in a more environmentally conscious way wherever possible, sustainability is something I think about often when teaching workshops and creating art at home.
Acrylic paint is incredibly versatile and beginner-friendly, but it is important to remember that acrylic paint is still a form of plastic. When washed directly down the sink, tiny plastic particles can eventually enter waterways and soil systems.
If you are eco-conscious like me, there are some simple ways to reduce waste and make your paint sessions kinder to the environment.
One of the easiest methods is filtering paint water using coffee filters or similar reusable filtration systems. This helps collect paint particles before the water is disposed of. The filtered paint residue can then be left to dry fully and placed in general waste rather than entering waterways.
It is such a small adjustment, but it can make a real difference over time.
I also strongly encourage reusable options wherever possible:
Reusable water pots instead of disposable cups
Washable cloths instead of endless paper towels
Reusable palettes rather than paper plates
Proper aprons or old clothing instead of single-use coverings
Even simple swaps like these help reduce unnecessary waste while still allowing people to enjoy painting in a relaxed and accessible way.
Finishing Your Paint Party with a Personal Touch
At the end of the session, one of my favourite things is seeing everyone line their paintings up together. Even when everyone has followed the same tutorial, every single piece ends up slightly different, which is honestly the magic of creativity.
You can make the end of your paint party feel even more special by:
Taking group photos with everyone’s paintings
Creating a little gallery wall for the evening
Sending guests home with mini art kits
Printing simple step-by-step sheets for continued practice
Encouraging people to sign and date their artwork
Most importantly, do not underestimate how valuable creative time really is.
In a world where so many people are overwhelmed, overstimulated, and constantly rushing, giving yourself permission to slow down and paint for a few hours can honestly feel incredibly therapeutic.
Whether you decide to host your own DIY paint party, join one of my in-person workshops, or paint along online from the comfort of home, I hope this inspires you to make a little more creative space in your life 🎨✨
